Hwy 13 & Hwy 814 Intersection Improvements

The City of Wetaskiwin recognizes that the safety of the Highway 13 and Highway 814 intersection is a priority for the community of Wetaskiwin. In support of that, the City has created a web page exclusively dedicated to updating the community on upcoming safety improvements for this intersection.

What’s Happening Now

  • Construction upgrades to the Highway 13 & Highway 814 intersection are complete.
  • Speed Limit Reduction in Effect
    The speed limit reduction for a portion of Highway 13 (from the City’s east boundary to 400m west of the Hwy 13/Hwy 814 intersection) became effective October 3, 2019. This speed reduction is part of the overall safety improvements slated for the Highway 13 and Highway 814 intersection. The map below outlines which area will see the speed limit lowered to 60 km/h (yellow).

  • May 2019: Wetaskiwin City Council allocated $36,000 from the budget for a detailed design of the Highway 814 and Highway 13 intersection, including feasible improvement options.
  • August 2019: The intersection analysis report—conducted by McElhanney Ltd.—was presented to Wetaskiwin City Council. Four feasible improvement options were included in the report. City Council preferred Option 3 and directed Administration to continue negotiating cost sharing with the Province of Alberta and County of Wetaskiwin using this option.
  • October 2019: Line locates for the new speed signage have been completed and the speed limit will be lowered to 60 km/h starting Thursday, October 3, 2019 at 8:00 AM.
  • October 2019: Central City Asphalt will began upgrades to the Highway 13 & Highway 814 intersection on Monday, October 7, 2019. Construction is now completed.
